Face of the Hatebook

With more than 2.6 billion monthly active users, Facebook is the biggest social network worldwide. Of them, there are over 290 million Facebook users in India alone, making it the leading country in terms of Facebook audience size. In emerging market contexts, it is expected that Facebook will display a steady growth, especially in countries like India where the market base of inexpensive smartphones and mobile data contracts in itself is expanding.

While for Facebook, its users are simply a set of variables to expand upon their advertisement revenue, Facebook users experience the platform as a ‘public square’ where many first-time internet users get their primary source of news and opinions. However, due to a lack of checks and balances, moderation, and effective responsible action, the public square has converted into a ‘lynch square’: There is a disturbing amount of disinformation, direct hate speech, and open calls to violence against minorities, Muslim minorities in particular. There is also an upward trend of rationalizing violence in the name of religion and justifying hate against particular social groups as a mode of historic vindication.

In this report, we expose the face of Facebook, and portray it as a hate book.
