India’s 2024 Elections: Mapping the Implications for Human Rights and Democracy

2024 has been called the great election year and for good reason. This year, over 2 billion voters will head to the polls in 50 countries. In India, often referred to as ‘the world’s largest democracy,’ 969 million registered voters will head to the polls starting April 19, over the span of more than a month. 

The incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is forecasted to maintain his place once election results are released on 4 June. Civil society in India and abroad are raising the alarm that another win for Modi may have devastating consequences for the already fragile situations for democracy and human rights. 

Thus, in light of the upcoming Indian elections, we at the London Story and L.S.A. Custodia invite you to join us in person on 7 May from 17.00 – 19.00 at Leiden University College in The Hague (The Netherlands)! Here, our expert panel will focus on the implications that these elections will have for human rights, the rule of law, and democracy in India.
