Meeting HRDs: Atmosphere of hate against religious minorities in India

October 10, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Between January 2017-September 2022, there were over 1436 verified instances of hate crimes in India. Over 86% of victims are Muslims, although violence against Christians has also risen by 81% between 2020 and 2021. Communal violence, physical assaults and lynchings have surged especially since congregations led by Hindu extremist leaders in December 2021, where attendees called for the elimination of religious minorities. The ensuing atmosphere of hate exposes religious minorities in India to severe threats to life.

This briefing brings together actors in Europe, with people from across faith communities who have long worked towards creating communal solidarity in India. As voices from the ground, they will reflect on the atmosphere of hate unfolding in India, the deliberate vilification of religious minorities by coordinated groups, and the support to these groups by state actors.
