On Thursday, October 12, join us to watch “Writing with Fire”, a documentary by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh. In a country where journalism is not considered a woman’s profession, and where press freedom ranks 161 worst worldwide, Dalit women launched the local weekly Khabar Lahariya, which quickly gained in popularity. Barely initiated into journalistic practices, these women learn to denounce inequality, corruption and gender-based violence, giving a voice to the so-called “Untouchables”.

An Indian activist based in the Tamil Nadu region, Siddamma Edwards works with the Irula communities and workers without social rights in Tamil Nadu. Her association is inspired by Bharathiar, a revolutionary Tamil poet. He wrote visionary poems about freedom, women’s liberation and an equitable society. She has helped set up two grassroots organisations: Sarpam Irular Thozhilalar Sangam and the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Union, which focuses on community building.
Alena Kahle works as an Advocacy and Communications Officer for The London Story, a human rights organisation run by Indian diaspora. She helps connect Indian human rights defenders with decision-makers at the EU and UN to promote accountability for human rights violations. In 2021, she co-organised the EU-India People’s Summit and continues to work on strengthening human rights in EU-India relations.
