We at Stichting The London Story partnered with Stop Funding Hate Germany as part of the Conscious Ad Network to raise awareness against automated advertising funds going to non-English European YouTube channels that create harmful content. The digital campaign launched in October on The London Story’s Digital Watch Twitter handle, using the hashtags #StopFundingHate as well as the German hashtag #Unterstuetztihrdas (translation: Do you support this). The campaign ran from the October 1 2021 until October 31 2021. Our findings raise serious questions regarding the ability of YouTube to enforce its own platform rules, and Google AdSense to identify videos with “hateful”, “misleading” or otherwise “advertiser-unfriendly” content.
